butter and cheese prices. WOOL COMPETITION IRREGULAR. Tho Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated January 23, from the High Commissioner -for New Zealand, London : Butter. —The market is steady and quiet. Official quotations arc:— I New Zealand. —Finest salted : January 23, 172s to 176s per cwt.; January lb, 174s to 1765. Unsalted: January 23, 176s to 178s; January 16, 178s. Other quailties: January 23, 162s to 1665. Australian.—Salted; January 23, 164s to 166s to 163s per cwt. ; January 16, 162s to 1665. Unsalted: January 23, 166s to 170s; January 16, 164s to 170s. Other qualities: Salted: January 25, 140s to 160s. Unsalted ; January 23, 150s to .1625. Argentine.—Unsalted : January 23, 150s to 156s per cwt.; January 16, 150s to 1565. Other qualities: January 23, 140s to 1435. Siberian.—January 23, 140s to 143s per cwt.: January 16, i4os to 148s. Danish.—January 23. 180s per cwt.; January 16, 178s to 180s. Cheese.—The market is quiet. English, finest farmers', unchanged. Canadian.—Coloured finest: January 23, 106s to 103s, up fo 110s per cwt. ; January 16, 106s to 108s, up to 110s. White: January 23, 106s to 110s; January 16, 106s to 103s.
New Zealand.—Coloured: January 23, 104s to 106s per cwt.; January 16, 104s. White: January 23, 101s to 102s; January 16, 100s to 102s. Casein.—French rennet., £55 to £7l; Danish, £54. Tallow.—There was very little demand at auction, but better business has been done later. Present quotations are unchanged, with the exception of; Mutton, fine, 46s per cwt.; beef, sweet and (or) mixed, 42s to 44s per cwt. Hemp.—Manila is easier. "J" grade, January-March and February-April shipments. sold down to £44 15s. Holders were firm at the close and February-April shipments sold at £45 ss. Sisal is dull. January-March shipments, No. 1 Tanganyika, value £44 10s. The New Zealand market is easier for high points. Sellers afloat and January-March shipments quoted £4O. Fair steady. JanuaryMarch shipments sold at £37 ss. MarchMay shipments are quoted at £36 15s. Wool.—Competition at tho sales is irregular and withdrawals are frequent, especially in Merino. Crossbred is now from par to 5 per cent, below last closing rates.
Eggs.—Tho trade is quiet. Present quotations are: Danish, 26s to 27s per long 100; English, Irish and Dutch, 19s to 235; Belgian, French and Italian, 17s to 225; Australian, 15s 6d to 16s 6d; Argentine and Russian, 13s 6d to 15s 6d; Moroccan, Chinese and Egyptian, 9s to lis 6d.
Shipments of New Zealand produco arrived this week by the Devon and Port Hobart.

Market very firm; distinct signs of renewed activity. Cheese.—White 101s; coloured 105s. Market quiet. LONDON WOOL SALES, BRADFORD TOPS MARKET. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Kecd. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 25. At the London wool sales to-day there was an average selection and in all classes there was fair competition at late rates. The New Zealand clip "Angi" realised 16d and 14|d. The Bradford tops market is quiet and there is practically no business. Quotations are upchanged.
