CRICKET IN AUSTRALIA. SHIELD AND STATE MAJCHES. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 11.35 p.m.) BYDNEY, Jan. £5. The Sheffield Shield cricket match, Victoria v. New South Wales, was continued to-day. "Victoria in their first innings yesterday had made 290 runs. New South Wales in their first innings to-day scored 372 for three wickets (Collins 143, Bardsley 28, Macartney 36, Kelleway not oot 40, Kippax not out 105). Collins' display was one of the best he has given. Ho scored at a fast rate and reached 60 while Bardsley was still in the twenties. The scoring slowed considerably when Kippax and Kelleway were partnered, neither taking chances. At Brisbane the match Queensland v. South Australia was resumed. Queensland in their first innings made 183 (R. Oxenham 65, Higgins 27, Hornibrook 30). A. Richardson took three wickets for 30 and Scott four for 54. South Australia, who made 198 in their first innings, lost seven wickets for 105 in their second (A. Richardson 38, Pritchard 71)..

AUSTRALIAN LAWN TENNIS. PATTERSON SUFFERS DEFEATS. A. and N.Z. ADELAIDE Jan. 25. In the Australian tennis championship singles, G. L. Patterson was defeated by Queensland's second player, E. F. Moon. The admirable manner in which Moon returned Patterson's services was the chief factor in the Queenslander's success. This is the second occasion in two months on which Patterson has been defeated in championship tennis, each time by .secondgrade players.

SWIMMING IN AMERICA. y THREE NEW WORLD'S RECORDS. A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. Jan. 24. Three world swimming records held by Johnny Weismuller were broken at Buffalo last evening. Walter Laufer, of Cincinnati, clipped 2.5s off the record for the 100 yds. backstroke, which he swam in lm ss. Without stopping he covered 100 metres in lm 11 l-ss, compared with W. Kealoha's lm 12 3-ss. Walter Spcnce, of Brooklyn, swam 100 yds, breast stroke style, in lm 9 2-ps, eslablishing a new w&rd by a full second.
