VANITIES.

One of the most charming novelties seen in the shops of the Rue. de la Paix and the Avenue de l'Opera is the. knitted sports hat, writes an exchange correspondent. Some of these were brought out earlier in the season, rather mule affairs of cotton or wool yarn. This latest Parisian chapeau is a bit of hand work, worthy of attention on its merits. It ;s knitted or crocheted in fine zephyr into which a border of flowers or conventional pattern is woven. 2he colours are lovely and the hat has made a sensation, particularly among the younger set. to whom it has an appeal for the seashore and country. Another new and particularly picturesque hat for occasional wear is a soft toque of silk or velour draped to look like a gypsy's head-dress. Some of the specialty shops are showing square kerchiefs printed in the Romany and peasant patterns. These are something of a fad for the moment to .wear with sports suits. x The Lenglen bandeau, a scarf of coloured silk tied about the head, is considered very chic, and is worn by the mannequin who displays the new sports suits. Borne of these will doubtless find their way to the Riviera and to the American Southern resorts during the winter. Buckles of many kinds are among the latest slipper ornaments. Good-looking buckles for daytime are made to match or to harmonise with the shoe. _ Some of these are original and charming, in bronze, jet, steel and leather. All of the French buckles appear to be smaller, daintier than the. stylo in last season s footwear. For evening there is apparently but one buckle, and that is set with brilliants, with genuine diamonds, with old paste, white sapphires, or white topaz, or just with rhincstones. Soma unusually attractive designs are to bo had: flower sprays, set in semi-circles; mercury wings, butterflies and other pretty things. Alongside the jeweled buckles one finds buttons for frocks and coats, like those* worn by the dandies of the. French Court. They are used a lot by fashionable eouturieres who are trimming many models with buttons of one sort and another, They add a bright touch and are especially effective on black velvet. Other than the buttons set with stones are many artistic designs most decorative on ft dress that is otherwise without trimming.
