Dr. L. A. Spedding loft for Dunedin yesterday morning. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Franks, of Christchurch, are at the Hotel Oargciu Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Rogers, of San Francisco, are at the Grand Hotel. Lieut.-Colonel J. H. Whyte, of Palmerston North, is at tho Grand Hotel. Mr. J. Windus, of Christchurch, ami Mr. T. Reynolds, of Wellington, are at the Grand Hotel. Mr. 18, D. McLennan, M.P. for Franklin, left by train last evening on a short visit to Palmerston North. Professor F. P. Worley and Dr. P. H, Buck left by train last evening to attend the Science Congress in Dunedin. Mr. and Mrs. H. Higby, of Melbourne, and Mr. and Mrs. 0. J. Thedens, of Whangarei, are at the Star Hotel. After acting as coroner in the To Awamutu district for a considerable number of years Mr. J. B. Teasdalo has resigned owing to advancing age. Mr. J. A. Bruce, of Wellington, Mr. R, B. S. Watson, of Suva, Mr. B. A Harris, of Rawene, and Mr. A. Potts, of Hokianga, are at the Royal Hotel. Mr. A. T. Hookey, of Gishcrne, Mr. H. F. Moss, of Wellington, Mr. F. W. Vogler, of Portland, and Mr. S. ,E. Carrj of Rotorua, are at the Central Hotel. ' Dr. F. A. Lamb, until recently on the Christ-church Hospital staff, left Auckland yesterday to take up a position as senior house surgeon at the Wanganui Hospital; Mr. P. F. Hodgson, Mr. R, Isaacs, and R. Ellett, of Wellington, Mr. J. H. McCarroll, of Dargaville, Mr. ,1. A. Gow, of Christchurch, and Mr. P. S. Rabone, of Palmerston North, are at tho Star Hotel. Mr. F. J. Smith, of Onga Onga,, Haw lie's Bay, is to succeed Mr. W, T. Brabyn as Presbyterian missioner at Kihikihi. Mr. - Brabyn leaves next week for the Tirau-Pataruru charge after six years at Kihikihi. Captain J. S. M. Ritchie, commander of H.M.S. Diomede, made an official call on the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, at, the Town Hall yesterday. In the afternoon the Mayor returned tho call, visiting 1 Captain Riicliic on board the Diomede at Devonport.
Arch deaf on H. W. Williams, of Gisborne, and Mr. Heathcotc Williams, of Hastings, left Auckland yesterday for Pailiia to attend the consecration of tie Memorial Church there. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Williams, of Gisborne, arrived in Auckland yesterday and will leave for Pailiia to-day;
Mr. W. A. Hawkins, Controller-General of the Prisons Department, who has been in the service of the department for more than the prescribed 40 years, h;vs forwarded his resignation and will shortly retire from the service. He has been identified with many branches of the activities of the department, including various constructive undertakings ami Borstal work and ho has seen the evola : tion of the department through iruuiy interesting phases. Mr. Hawkins is oyer 60 years of age.
