AMERICAN MINERS.

STRIKE SETTLEMENT PLAN. CONFLICTING ANNOUNCEMENTS. A. and N.Z.—Reuter. NEW YORK. Jan. 23. A message from Scranton, Pennsylvania, states that the United Mine Workers t>f America agreed to accept the new plan advanced for a settlement of the strike in the anthracite mines. The president, Mr. John Lewis, announced that he would meet the negotiating committee of the operators in an attempt to come to a settlement which would send 158,000 men back to work. A telegram from Philadelphia states, however, that the latest effort to end the strike has apparently failed as the operators have announced that the new proposal did not meet any of the requirements of the situation.
