PROSPEROUS COUNTRYSIDE
AREAS NEAR TAURANGA. FLAX MILLING CONTEMPLATED. [BY TELEGBArH. —OWN CCTREESPONDENT. ] TAURANGA. Satuiday. ' The rain cleared off at a late hour last night and the gale dropped shortly afterwards. The rainfall this week totalled 2.33iiL, and is the best recorded since October. The farms in the Paengaroa, Pongakawa, Ohinepanea and Qtamarakau districts are looking exceptionally well just now. The areas named are among the best in the fertile Bay of Plenty territory. All the holdings have a prosperous appearance and are carrying great mobs of fat cattle and sheep, as well as splendid dairy herds. There are several new settlers on the swamp country near the Pongakawa River. There is still a large area of land awaiting the expenditure of capital and labonr to convert it into a productive state. Magnificent crops of flax are now growing in the Waihi swamp and adjacent areas in the Pnkehina district. It is understood that the milling of this flax is likely to bo commenced in the near future.
