OBITUARY.
MRS. GHAMjOTTE RILEY. ' The death occurred on Tuesday at hejr residence in Wallaco Street, Ponsonby, of Mrs. Charlotte Riley, widow of the late yMr. James Riley, an old and highly-re-spected colonist. Mrs. Riley, who had reached the age of 86, was born in Norfolk, England. In. 1853 she proceeded to Australia ! ueop'atfa,' one of the first, steamboats to makp tho voyage, '" Mrs, Riley came 'to Auckland in 1864 in thii barque Alice Cameron, and was in Hamilton during the Waikato War, in which Mr. Riley took part. For the last 53 years Mrs. Riley had resided in Ponsonby. She had a family of eleven, eight son?, and three daughter;;, nine of whom are still living. There are 26 grandchildren arid 10, great-grandchildren. One of the sons, is Mr. W. Riley, head of the firm of Rileys, Limited, furniture manufacturers, Sydney. Other sons are well known in football and yachting circles. MRS. GRACE SMITH. . The death of Mrs. Grace Smith', which occurred at- the residence of her daughter in Rolleston Street, Thaihes, removes one of the early Albertland settlers. Mrft Smith, who had reached tho age of 83', arrived in Auckland in 1863 by the sliip Gertrude. After residing for some time in Auckland, where Mc Smith carried oh business as a builder, Mr. and Mrs. Smith removed to Thames. Later they lived in Kauaeranga Valley. Mrs. Smith is survived by three sor.i3 and two daughters and 17 grandchildren. MRS. FITZROY PEACOCKE. There passed away this week, in her 73rd year, Mrs. Fitzroy Peacocke, an early colonist and a much-respected member of the-Roman Catholic faith. Mrs. Peacocke was born at Peshawur, India, where her father, Captain Pilling, H.M. 64th Regiment, served through the Indian Mutiny. As a child of nine, she, with the other members of the family, came to New Zealand. After the Maori War, her father took up a grant of land at tho original Howick military Tit 1868 the family moved to tho Waikato and took possession of the farm Weston Lav, on the rrver-bank at Hamilton*, where her eldest son, Mr. Frank Peacocke, still resides. Her husband, who died a few years ago, was a son of Colonel Stephen Peacocke, H.M. SQth Regiment; Howick'. Mrs. Peacocke leaves seven children, Messrs. Frank, Hilary and Noel Peacocke, Mesdames Jack O'Brien, J. C. Fabsfc, Wills, McLaughlin and Miss Madge Peacocke. There are 15 grandchildren. . One son, Mr. Cyril Peacocke,'died of wounds at Ypres in the last year of the war.
