THE FIELDS REVIEWED. [j)X TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Recent rains hr.vo improved the racetrack at Trentham and with sunshino today it should be in capital order for the opening day's racing. '*• Star Stranger and Star Ra.nger will be coupled on the ,totalisator in the Wellington Cup, and, if all three start. Grand Knight, Royal Divorce, and Pool's Paradise will be bracketed. The * last-named, however, is considered a,doubtful runner. Star Stranger is galloping very well, and he is pretty sure to start favourite. Star Ranger has also acquitted himself well in his training work. Enthusiasm arrived only to-day, but she is expected to run well. Selections for the Telegraph Handicap take a wide range, and from that it may be concluded the issue is regarded as very open. Mimetic, who can be looked upon as well treated in the handicap, has been galloping in good style. ( i Set Sail looks equal to holding her own. She has pleased very much sinbo coming to Trentham. Black Cat. who is coming to her best, may be hard to beat.

The High-weight Handicap, an event in which tho riders are selected from steeplechase and hurdle race jockeys, should furnish an interesting contest. The three-year-old, Mask, wilj bo ridden by L. G. Morris. Lady Cavendish is sure to start a warm favourite in tho Wellington Stakes, but the connections of both The Thorn and Limited are hopeful of their prospects. Wristlet, Arpent, and Mosaic are well placed in the Apprentices' Plate. Note, Vertigan, and Paper Boy are expected to show np in the Fitzherbert Handicap.

Modem will only require to be decently ridden to enable' her to play a part in the settlement of the Anniversary Handicap. Roues and Tommy Dodd are, however, a pair that will have good followings. , A strong field is engaged in the Ruapapa Handicap, and there is ample room for a surprise. Ohui, Dal Eaton, and Indian Sago axe a trio tioked off as likely to run out the six furlongs. SCRATCHINGS. The following scratchings were posted today:— Wellington Cup.—Beacon Light. Wellington Stakes.—Lady Desmond. All Engagements.—Gamecock. TRAINING AT TRENTHAM. '"YESTERDAY'S WQRK. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, fpuesday.
