MISSION TO CALIFORNIA. BROADCASTING AND FILMS. fPY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. " I found it quite pioneer work," said Mr. F. E. Tomlinson, who has been making New Zealand known in California on "behalf of the country and the Union Steam Ship Company, by means of films, slides and lectures,, " and I found the American people not only ready to listen but enthusiastically interested in a country of whose existence they' had been practically ignorant. So far from finding difficulties I was accorded every assistance by the press, scientists, commercial 'men and private individuals; I found the Americans deeply interested in the sporting and scenic attractions of the and I was repeatedly asked,. 4 Why has it not been advertised before V " Mr. Tomlinson had; intended* to make a tour of other largo centres, but he found such a wide field in San Francisco, aided by the radio, that he did not proceed further afield. A window 60ft. square was taken on Market Street in San Francisco, and from this centre literature, scenic folders and information generally were distributed, while every evening audiences were addressed. One newspaper published a full page of photogravure pictures of New Zealand scenery and invitations to address large gatherings grew in number as the stay continued, open-air audiences applauding the films. The radio station, which reaches 1,500,000 people in the Western States, made use of Mr. Tomhnson's lectures and wrote :, u The mail return from the vast audience was most appreciative in .character and displays the fact thoroughly that the American public is seeking the information you delivered, picturing the wonders of another country, a country with the charm and friendliness of New Zealand." Other radio stations wrote similarly. . Chambers of commerce were equally pressing m invitations, and in extending facilities. Mr. Tomlinson thinks there is every oppbrtunty for reciprocal arrangements regarding tourist trips between the two countries.
