TUAKAU AFFAIRS.
THE LEVEL CROSSIING.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
TUAKAU, Friday,
The Tuakau Town Board was advised by tho Minister for Railways that, after full consideration, he could only renew the original offer to build an overhead bridge at the level crossing at Tuakau provided the local bodies interested found half the cost. In the alternative, tho Department would provide an overhead bridge for stock across tho railway yards at the stock pens if tho board would make the approaches. The chuirfnan, Mr. W. J. Taylor, said either proposal would mean the finding of about £2OOO by the ratepayers, and that was out of tho question. Overhead bridges had been erected over railway crossings in other towns without the local bodies being required to contribute toward the cost.
It was decided to reply that the board could not take advantage of either alternative and to ask that some such safeguard as an electric warning bell be installed at the crossing meanwhile. The raising and metalling of Cole's .Road at its junction with the main road was authorised, and it was agreed to spend about £SO on' tarring and sanding footpaths in a few weeks' time.'
