Cardinal Gasquet is gravely ill in Rome, and has received the Last Sacrament. His Eminence Desire Joseph Mercier, who is a Belgian, was born near Malines in 1851, and was ordained in 1874. He became archbishop of Malines in 1906, and was created ;i cardinal in tho following year. Throughout the four years of tho occupation of Belgium by the German troops during the Great War Cardinal Mercier was the heart and soul of the moral resistance of the Belgians. Step by step he fought with the German Governors, Von Bissing and Von Falkenhausen for the hist remnants of Belgian independence. . Cardinal Gasqtiet was born in London in 1846 and was created a cardinal in 1914. He gained eminence as president of the International Commission for the Revision of the Vulgate, and is a historical writer of authority.
