ROMANCE OF A TITIAN.
A MAGNIFICENT PICTURE. A magnificent painting of Venus, which experts attribute to Titian, has been discovered in the private collection of M. Lanco, a retired veterinary surgeon, at Vannes, writes the Paris correspondent of a London paper. The picture represents a nude Venus surprised at her toilet and turning to hide her confusion. Bearing a strong resemblance to " Venus with a Mirror " in the Hermitage Museum at Leningrad, only much darker, M. Lanco's picture seems to be a happy repetition of the same study. It is believed to have been painted for Philip 11. of Spain, who ordered it in 1560, but in executing it Titian modified his original conception and executed this one in warmer tones The canvas was duly sent off to its Royal owner, but never reached its destination, being stolen en route by pirates, who sold it to an Irishman. He, in turn, sold it to an English family, through one of whose descendants it came into the possession of M. Lanco.
