ALLEGED BURGLARS.

ARRESTS AT CH Ml ST CHURCH. J DISCOVERY IN EMPTY HOUSE. FIVE MEN REFUSED BAIL. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHITRCn. Tuesday. As a result of police activity during last evening and in the early hours of this morning five men were arrested by mem- j hers of the detective force. Three of those arrested are reputed to be members of a gang which is alleged to be responsible for several burglaries, including the attempt to blow up the safe of Messrs. Packer and Jones, Ltd., during the New j Year holidays. The other two are alleged to be responsible, together with a J man who was arrested some days ago, for burglary at Mr. E. Protheroe's shop in Cashcl Street. The names of those arrested are:—Frederick Augustus Armitage. aged 36, Walter Fraser Sherriff Harneiss, 35, Joseph Hogan Byrne, 49, Charles Stanley James Dell, 22, and Frederick Logic, 22. The story of the capture of Armitage, Harneiss and Byrne provides an illustration of the value of information given by civilians to the police. For some time past a certain house in St. Martin's Road has been empty, but a few days ago carpenters went to the building to do some work, They found signs of habitation and informed the police. A police watch was then set on the place, the result being that early this morning Detectives Laugeson and Shanley, and : Constable Rowe, arrested the three men at this house. In the house they found several sticks of gelignite, some detonators, three jemmies, a mirror, several packets of cigarettes and some razor strops, all of which are alleged to be the results of thefts. The arrested men appeared in the Police Court this mbrning to answer several charges of burglary and theft. In asking for a remand Chief-Detective Gibson said other charges were pending. The accused were remanded to appear on January 12. Bail was refused.
