FARMER'S SERIOUS LOSS.
PLANTATION SWEPT BY FIRE. A POOR LANDS EXPERIMENT. [Br TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WAIHI, Saturday. A well-known Whangamata settler, Mr. Williamson, who., two or threo years ago, decided to experiment with the afforestation of a very considerable area of poor land, including sand dunes, has had the misfortune to lose a very largo proportion of the trees, bluegum and pinus insignis, the plantation being swept by fire. The cause is not clear. The trees were making excellent growth, and tho experiment was being watched with close interest by others in tho locality interested as to the possibilities of this form of utilising comparatively waste lands.
