THE RUSSELL REGATTA.

NICE BREEZE AND SMOOTH. LITTLE JIM WINS KEEL RACE. STARLIGHT THE CENTREBOARD. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORT EE. J RUSSELL, Wednesday. The Russell Regatta was held to-day, and was a great success. The weather was ideal for both sailing and rowing events. Early in the morning a heavy mist hung over the harbour, but by 10 a.m. it had cleared, giving place to bright sunshine, with a nice northerly breeze and smooth water. There was a very largo attendance at the regatta, visitors from all parts of the North ilowing into Russell. A feature was the large entries received for the rowing events, crews hailing from Auckland, Whangarei and Hamilton. The The Ngatiawa, which made a special trip from Auckland, brought over 80 oarsmen. The general arrangements for the regatta wore carried out without a hitch, reflecting credit on the chairman of the committee, Mr. T. S. Boucher, and the hon. secretary, Mr. E. O. Hew in. The officials in charge of the racing were:—Starter and timekeeper for sailing and launch races, Mr. W. A. Wilkinson; judge, Mr. G. E. Laycock; starter and umpire for rowing events, Mr. E. H. Buckler; judges, Messrs. R. H. Allan and A. C. Norden; stewards, Messrs, C. Woodall and H. Strawbridge. Results were as follow : THE KEEL YACHTS. The race for keel yachts brought out Beven starters. Little Jim crossed the line first, closely followed by Rangi. Prize. V. indward. Lady Wilma and Waitangi in that order. Delville was 3m Gs late. The northerly breeze gave the boats a lead to the first mark off Brompton, where spinnakers were set for the run to the Nobby Island buoy. Prize took the lead just before reaching the first mark, and improved her advantage on tho run down the harbour. Waitangi ran into third position off Pahia. while Lady Wilma replaced Scout. Windward and Rartgi. On the completion of tho first round the times were:—Prize. 12h 51m 30s; Little Jim, 12h 53m Is; Waitangi. 12h 56m ss; Lady Wilma, 12h 59m 10s: Windward. 11l 2m 30s; Rangi. lh 3m 15s; Scout, lh 3m 335; Delville. lh 5m lis. The wind lightened in the second round, both Windward and Rangi getting becalmed for a few minutes through standing too close under Russell Point. Prize continued her lead, but did not do so well on this round. Little Jim gaining on her on the beat from the Nobby. Scout and Delville passed Rangi. The finishing times were:—Prize (acr), lh 53m 20s; Little Jim (10m). lh 55m 8a; Waitangi (8m). 3h 58m 18s; Lady Wilma (7m), 2h lm 58s; Windward (11m), in 13m 455; Scout (15m), 2h 17m 8s; Delville (9m), 2h 17m 41s; Rangi (14m). 2h 27m Is. Result.-—Little Jim. 1: Waitangi, 2; Prize, 3. CENTREBOARD YACHTS. There were six competitors in the race for centreboard yachts, which were sent away to a pretty start. Waitere I. crossed the line first, and next to her came Starlight. Ngaru 11., Valeria. Wairere and Waima in that order. Waitere led Starlight until the second round of the course, when the latter passed her on the run _to the Nobby mark. Vv airere occupied third position on both rounds and Ngaru 11. fourth. The finishing times were:—Starlight (scr). 2h 16m 41s; Waitere (scr). 2h 20m lis; Wairere (14m). 2h 3am Ifis: Ngaru 11. (11m). 2h 36m 83; Valeria (SmK 2h 36m 555; Waima (13m), 2h 45m 30s. . Result.—Starlight, 1; Waitere 11., 2; Wairere, 3. ENGINE-POWERED BOATS. Local Launch Race.—The finishing times were - T. P. (41m 20s). 2h 23m 365. 1; Dons (6m 40s), 2h 27m, 2; Cheviot (21m 20s), 2h 28m 12s, 3; Kings (29m 20s), 2h 33m ss. All-comers' Launch Race. —The finishing times were: Mac (2ra), 4h 19m 50s; Rosemary (5m i 4h 23m 15s; Alma G (sm), 4h 26m 35s;'Doris (12m), 4h 29m 6s; Wairere (24m). 4h 39m; Marion D. (04m 30s), 4h 41 m 10s; Jean B. (28m), 4h 45m 12s; Daisy (28m 40s), 4h 45m 17s. Result: Wairere, 1; Rosemary, 2; Daisy 3, Four boats started in the race for auxiliaries, but owing to a misunderstanding over the handicaps the race was declared off. It will be resailed later on. Outboard Championship of New Zealand.— This was decided over a 5-knot course. In the first round the order was: Baby jiilto, Baby Mac. Bonzo, All Black, and Toheroa, In the second round the same order was kept except that Toheroa gave up. In the third round Baby Mac stopped and Bonzo took second place. The result was: Baby Elto. 3h 25m 335, 1; Bonzo, 3h 28m 15s. 2; Baby Mac, 3h 28m 455, 3; All Black. 3h 32m 31s. Elto Outboard Motor Race.—This was for rowing boats only, and was decided over a 2}-knot. course. Five boats started, and the race resulted in a win for Little Mary, with Gay second and No, 9 third. Rowboat Outboard Motor Race.—Row No Mot'. 1; Porky, 2; Toheroa, 3. All-comers' Outboard Motor Race.—Toheroa, 1; Gay, 2; Little Mary, 3. DETAILS OF THE ROWING. Maiden Fours.—West End, 1; St. George's, 2; Auckland, 3. Won easily. Open Singles.—'W. A. Stevenson (Waitemata), 1; J. W. St. Clair (Hamilton), 2; T. Johnson (Waitemata), 3. Won by three lengths. Junior Fours.—Hamilton, 1; St. Georges. 2; West End. 3. Won by 2ft. after a great contest. The wash from the speed boat Miss Devonport caused North Shore to swamp. Maiden Double Sculls.—Waitemata, 1; Auckland, 2; West End, 3. Won by a length. Whangarei swamped. Youths' Fours.—West End. 1; St. George's, 2. Whangarei and Hamilton swamped and Si. George's also got into difficulties. Heavy Maidens. —Waitemata, 1; St. George's, 2. . , ... , The race for the senior fours will be rowed at Onerahi on Friday. • TAURANGA REGATTA. ENTERTAINMENT OF VISITORS. [BY TELEGRAPH.--OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Wednesday. Most of the Auckland yachts which participated in the regatta have left on the return cruise. The local yachts Matua and Janet have sailed for the Mercury Bay area on cruises. Auckland yachtsmen subscribed on regatta day for the purchase of a trophy to be awarded as a prize for a race for local 7ft. sailing boats. The entertainment of the visitors included a motor trip to Rotorua, an inspection of the Tauranga hydro-electric works. Other functions, including a trip to Otumoetai, where a party were the guests of Mr, and Mrs. Osborne.
