AUSTRALIA'S GREAT PEST. STORY OF INTRODUCTION. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 11.5 p.m.) LONDON. Dec. 22. The Daily Express reports that Mr. C. J. Thatcher claims that his father was responsible for introducing rabbits into Australia. Mr. Thatcher's father served on small sailing ships and also travelled as an agent for an acclimatisation society which sought to introduce more animals into Australia.
In 1863 sporting residents of Victoria, who had wearied of the existing diversions and had scoured the land for something fresh to kill, applied to the society which granted permission for the importation of hares or rabbits.
Mr. Thatcher sailed with the first batch on the sailing ship Relief, but none lived. After three failures he succeeded on the fourth voyage, only to discover that sportsmen had found other diversions. Mr. Thatcher liberated the rabbits in the bush and was later presented with a medal on behalf of the grateful Victorians, commemorating the introduction of rabbits and other animals and birds.
