TAXATION ON BETTING.

CONSIDERATION PROMISED. " EVIL OF SOCIAL Lire." (Received 5.5 p.m.) Renter. LONDON. Dec. 22. The proposal to place a tax on betting has been again submitted to the Treasury. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, received an influential deputation on the subject, headed by Lord Newton.

Mr. Churchill explained that his reception of the deputation did not mean that ho or the Government had reached any decision favourable to the taxation of betting. Certainly, lie added, no Government could contemplate any step which might lead to an increase of a wasteful form of expenditure, which was an evil in social life.

The Chancellor promised to examine all aspects of the question impartially.
