DEATH OF A SHUNTER.

DUST AT PAL.MF.RSTON NORTH. REMARK BY THE CORONER. [by telegraph.—PßESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Wednesday. An inquest was hold regarding the death of Mr. Douglas Norman Pye, shunter at Pal mors ton North, who died in the hospital following injuries received in aii accident, in the local railway yards. Evidence was given that deceased was taking the numbers of stationary waggons at. the time. A strong wind was blowing and the yards were very dusty. Deceased stepped back to avoid a swirl of dust and was struck by a moving waggon on the next line, thrown to the ground and dragged along until the truck stopped. A railway witness said that on busy days the yard was usually hosed down, but this was not done that day. In witness' opinion tho yard should bo sprayed with oil, but the department said shunters in other parts of the Dominion objected to spraying with oil, because it made the yards slippery and dangerous. In returning a verdict in accordance with medical testimony that death was due to shock from injuries received the coroner said the fatality was purely accidental, but ho trusted the department would note what was said about the dust nuisance.
