ARRESTED FOR FRAUD.
IMPOSTOR PLEADS GUILTY. GOODS BY FALSE PRETENCES. [BY TEIEGRAPH.— FRE9S ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. A young man, Herbert William Upjohn who gave his age as 20, was charged today with obtaining goods to the value of £3B from Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Stains, drapers and clothiers, and attempting to obtain suits worth £47 from J. T. Lewis and J. H. Doherty by a pretence that he was a member of the Governor-General's staff: and obtaining a typewriter of the value of £lB 18s from the Remington Roneo Agency by a pretence that he was Captain Upjohn, of the London Times.
Detective Walsh said that when arrested tho accused said he was Captain Upjohn, of the Welsh Guards, and had recently arrived. Ho later confessed that lie belonged to New Zealand. He said he had been employed with the Empire Press Union in Australia, and camo to New Zealand as a steward. Ho had since done work for New Zealand newspapors. Upjohn pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence.
An additional chargo of stealing a typewriter, valued at £22, the property of Hobday and Co., Auckland, was adjourned until December 31
