THE WELLINGTON ZOO.
NEW COLONY OF MONKEYS. BIRTH OF A BABY TIGER. By the Maunganui, which arrived at Wellington from Sydney on Tuesday, there came to hand a new colony of monkeys tor tho Wellington Zoo, an opportune shipment which will quicken interest among the children who frequent the gardens during tho holidays. Tho new comers are all from India and consist of sis rhesus monkeys, tho common or garden variety of the Indian forest; sis crabeating macaques, which get their name through a habit they have of seizing and eating the crabs which frequent their native Habitat, a diet they are not likely to gef at Newtown; six bonnet monkeys, which derive their appellation from tho toque-liKe hirsute crowns to their quaint little heads; one black-faced Entellus monkey, the sacred member of India's monkey tamily; and two interesting black apes from tho Celebes Islands.
A baby tiger was born at the zoo last Sunday, ' the son and heir of Prince, tlie gift of tho Prince of Wales, and ""Peggy, a popular member of the zoo collection. The youngster is not yet' visible to the public, but should the weather prove warm and the conditions favourable otherwise, it will be given an airing on Christmas Day.
