UNIQUE DECORATIONS.
CARINTHIA'S STATE RGO&S A tour of inspection of the liner Carinthia yesterday afternoon provew a delightful excursion into the realms of modern decorative art. The colour schemes of the furnishings in the state, rooms were veritable works of art. Beautiful soft shades of blue that could best be described as a delphinium harmony were to be found in the writing-room where the coverings and cushions—downy squares of huge proportions—were of blue brocaded in pale gold. Hangings in blue artistically ornamented with banners of gold draped the doors and windows, and the pillars supporting the ceiling were in the deepest of aquamarine blue. To enhance the beauty and effect of the colouring pedestal lamps in the form of inverted bowls threw the light on to a maize-tinted ceiling. Across a corridor lay the card-room, a symphony in cool and restful greens. Chairs fashioned to reach a high art in comfort and design were covered in green-embossed leather or cushioned in velvets that matched a carpet green as grass. Over the fire-placa a panel depicting a sylvan scene reproduced in nature's richest tints the colour harmony that was perfect in every detail. The smoking-room, perhaps the most magnificent of all, mada a strong appeal to that sense of cultured art where, xxx antiquity and its mellowing' softness, lies the secret charm. The rich tones of Burgundy, claret and ruby wines were to be founa in the tapestries on. the dead white walls, in the velvets of the chairs and in the thickly-piled carpet that deadened the heaviest tread. Gold and lacquer is introduced in the quaintly-designed cabinets and heavy gold embroideries adorn the stiff little curtains that hang at the side of . the latticed windows. The room is typically Spanish and the furnishings of the fifteenth century period. Highbacked chairs, handsomely carved, and others fashioned in a scoop with elbow rests, are masterpieces of exquisite workmanship, and the great open fireplace, tinted a rich Cream, is elaborately ornamented with' scroll designs. A realistic touch is given in the smoke stains that smudge the creamy surface round the opening.
