THE UGLIEST MAN.
COMPETITION IN MELBOURNE. There are many ways of making money for charity, but the latest device in Melbourne should be an immense success. Nominations have been called from ugly men who will "stand" as candidates fur the honour of being Melbourne's ugliest man. Some candidates are already in the field and are earnestly canvassing for votes. It is said that the two men who for years have enjoyed the honour of being the ugliest and second ugliest men in Victoria are much annoyed at the encroachment ou their prerogatives. The second ugliest man, a Collins Street surgeon, has always asserted that his face has been a great element in his success. Ho manages to fascinate all sorts of people. Men quote his views, women adore him and children crowd round him when ho comes within their reach. "But now peoplo like Mr. W. A. Watt and others," says a Melbourne correspondent, "are making strenuous efforts to win tho p r i ze _a silver cup—and are getting together committees to support their faces Up to date Mr. Watt seems to be, leading favourite and he is getting great help horn his committees, which are still intact after tho last election. "The other candidates consider that. Nature has given Mr. Watt an unfair advantage. I once heard him say that he hoped he would never have the misfortune to be placed in the dock, as any jury would convict him without, leaving the box on the evidence of his face alone.''
