MUSSOLINI'S FOLLY.
SUPPRESSION OF NEWSPAPER. " BLOW TO CIVILISATION." LONDON. Dec. 1. " A serious blow to European civilisation," is how the Times in a leading article describes Mussolini's virtual suppression of the Corriere Delia Sera, Italy's greatest newspaper. The Times points out that the paper's criticism of the Fascist regime was never captious, and that its disappearance as an independent newspaper must arouse serious perplexity in all countries where the traditions of a free and independent press are still maintained. "It may be, of course, that Sigr.or Mussolini desires to reduce Italy in the eyes of the world to the position of Incomprehensibility in wheh Russia now stands," says the Times. " Russia has only an official press, and the real sentiments of the Russian people are unknown. " With the suppression of the Corriere Delia Sera Signor Mussolini's Italy will henceforth have only a regulated and disciplined press, merely reflecting the views of the party in power. It will be hard in the future to understand Italy and Fascismo."
