Dee. 9. A sensational murder was committed in a city street to-day. Two electricians, Ernest Williams, aged 23, and Jean Macßobertson, both Americans, were lunching at a cafe, when a man at a table near them told them not to smoke. Words followed, and Williams then left the table and walked outside. The man who had been arguing with him followed him cut and resumed the altercation. Finally, it is alleged, the stranger put his hand in his hip pocket. Williams aimed a blow at him and tried to grasp the hand the man had thrust into his pocket. The stranger is said to have pulled out a revolver wrapped in a handkerchief from his pocket and to have fired at Williams. Tho bullet pierced Williams' heart and he fell dead. The stranger ran away, but a constable, who was sitting in a shop on the opposite side of the road and had seen the occurrence, pursued arid arrested him. Later William LI. Wallace, of Melbourne, was charged with murder.
