RAILWAYS MANAGEMENT.
MAKING UP A PROFIT. ABSENCE OF SENTIMENT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. "There is no sentiment about the Government," was the comment of the chairman, Mr. ,1. A. Flesher, at a meeting of the executive of the Anniversary Day Committee when a reply was received from the railways district traffic manager notifying that the department was unable to grant a concession in connection with the carriage of bullocks and a dray to be used in connection with the procession. The letter was as follows:—"I am directed to inform you that the board regrets that it is unable to authorise free conveyance of a waggon and bullock team from Little River to Christ-church and a quantity of slabs from Ruatapu to Christ-church in connection with the anniversary celebrations of the province of Canterbury. Consequent upon the general reorganisation of the department's financial and accounting system the department is required to provide full interest instead of a policy rate of interest on all capital charges, and it is essential in order to bring in sufficient revenue for this purpose to receive credit for all services performed."
