The official time reported was lni 18s. 5.0.5.. Remuera.--The race in which Deo Delaval brought off a surprise was the First Hack Handicap, run at the Takapuna meeting on January 25. 1902. It is apparently cniite correct to state that 16 tickets were issued on the winner, but it lias to b« remembered that at the period named two dividends (inside and outside) wero declared. Only ono ticket was issued on Leo Delaval on the outside totalisator. NOTES BY PHAETON. Tho value of the next Wellington Cup will bo £'1750. which includes a trophy worth £IOO. The new owner of the New Zealand Derby winner Runnvmedo, Mr. T. C. Trautwein, is a well-known hotolkt-eper in Sydney. Tho Dargaville Cup, to be run on the 17th inst., has drawn an acceptance of ten, with Boomerday (9.3) at the head of tho list. The Canterbury-owned horses engaged at the Auckland Summer Meeting, it is stated, will probably not be sent North until nexweek. The combination. Count Cavour and Money Order, for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap, is stated to be popular in Canterbury. Black Mint, who led the field home in the First Division of the Trial Plate at Woodville yesterday, is a three-year-old gelding by Catmint. Stork would appear to be training on satisfactorily, as he figures among the entrants for the two leading events set down for decision at the Tarakani Summer Meeting. Included among the to bo offered at the approaching sale at Ellerslie is a half-sister to Amythas and a. half-sister to Gasbag, both of which were got by Tea Tray. The New Zealand-bred horse Humbug (by Absurd) was represented by his first winner in Australia recently, when his two-year old son Bunkum won a Nursery Handicap at Rorchill. In a reference to The Banker, "Maecenas writing in the Hawera Star, states that O. Cox. who trains the Kilbroney gelding, is in the hf.ppy position of holding a halfshare in the New Zealand Cup winner. J. Munro. who steered Windbag to victory in the Melbourne Cup, suffered a fall while riding at the Roßehill meeting on the 21st ult., and. though he was not seriously hurt, ho decided to take a rest for several weeks. Frank Bullock, who retires from the ranks of jockeys this year, after a brilliant career in England, was born in North Melbourne <SO years ago, and has been engaged in laceriding since ho attained the age of 15. The New Zealand-bred gelding Pluto, who i<« now included among veterans of the race track, continues to win races in Australia. The latest winning exploit on bis part was recorded in connection with the Bend:go Handicap, which he won under 8.9.

English-bred horses continue to be imported to Australia. Mr. L. K. S. McKinnon. chairman of the Victoria Racing Club, durins his recent visit to the Old Country, purchased a colt by Spion Kop from Eacer Agnes, and the youngster reached Melbourno by a recent stoaxner.

Forfeit having been paid for Lady Caven dish in connection with the 20th Palmerston North Stakes, this would seem to point, to Mr. G. F. Moore having decided on sending the Absurd mare to Ellorslie. Lady Cavendish fiprures in the Railway Handicap with the handy impost of 7.10, and she has another vaJuabla engagement in tho Royal Stakes. Royal Diadem, by Polydamon—Royal Mary, is reported to have changed hands recently. Royal Diadem managed to win a two-year-old race at Ellerslie in the summer of 192'!, but he has proved a complete disappointment in the interval. Last season he contested six races and he only succeeded in gaining a place on one occasion, and that was in a minor event at Wairoa, in which the starters only numbered four. Mare* have a decent record in connection with the A.R.C. Railway Handicap. Dating from 1901 tho following mares lnivo led tho field home in tho big sprint race of the summer season: -Cruciform (9.0), Lady Annie (7.9) Miss "Winnie (7.4), Gipsy Belle (8.1). Culprit (8,4). Tete-a-tete (8.7). Nanna (7 10), Tigritiya (7.10), Statuette (7.13), Silver Link (9.0), and Parody (6.12). Tho mares are well represented this year, and chief among them may be mentioned Gleritruin. Tukia and Lady Cavendish. In Wanganui Tho Thorn is considered r possibility in connection with tho Great Northern Derby. Being a descendant of Absurd, that does not servo to infuso confidence where the distance to bo travelled extends to a mile and a-half. On the dam's side, however, The Thorn's pedigree abounds m staying blood, and that may help him at Ellevsli© on New Year's Day. His dam. Rose Queen, was got by King Rufus (a grandson of stout-hearted Melton) from Roscommon. who is a daughter of tho Derby winner Common (son of Isonomy). who was undoubtedly a great stayer. Mr. W. C. Ring will furnish-,a quartette of yearling!) to tho forthcoming sale to be held at Ellerslie. and, judging from a series of photosraphs which Dr. Ring allowed mo to scan, tho youngsters bred at the Hinuera estate will) form an attractive collection from tho Waiktto. The colt by Potoa from Chime, who ranks as a full-brother to the speedy Rati, is a very fine youngster; and a filly by Potoa from Polly Perkins also looks good. A briy colt by Valkyrian from Unity is a h«lf-brother to Te Monanui, and ho looks an aristocrat. A good word can also bo said for a bay colt by Valkyrian from Miss Modest. Australian jockeys were in fairly strong force on English racecourses last season. Frank Bullock was once again the most prominent. among the Australian-born division, The following table sets out the performances of all tho Australian jockeys who rode in England during tho past season:
