Miss Hellaby is staying at the Hotel Cargen. Mrs. Sweet, of England, is staying with Mrs. Noel Adams, Wharekawa. Miss E. Alison is at present staying with Mrs. Bonner, St. Heliers Bay. Miss Bessie Pagni, of Remuera, left by the Aorangi on an extended visit to Australia. Miss Margaret Shepard, matron at the Milton Hospital, has been appointed matron of the new hospital at Baiclutha. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Carr are leaving at the end of the week for Pahia, Bay of Islands, where they intend to stay over the Christmas holidays, A Sydney exchange states that the marriage took place at St. Mark's Church, Darling Point, of Miss Lorrain Peacock, of Auckland, to Mr. Red Maidan. Among tho visitors at the Hotel Cargen are Mrs. Quill and Miss Quill, Christchurch, Mrs. Molina and Miss Moline, Palmers ton North, Mrs. E. H. Buchanan, Sydnev, Mrs. King and Miss King, Sydney, Jliss Craft, Sydney. Mrs. J. M. McLachlan and Miss McLachlan, of 4, Pencarrow Avenue, Mount Eden, returned by the Maunganui yesterday after two years touring abroad, principally in Great Britain and on the Continent. They will reside temporarily at the Hotel Cargen, It is now the custom in England for a Masonic Lodge to entertain women at a ladies' festival. This is regarded as an annual function and it was recently announced by ono of the lodges that a dinner and concert followed by a dance would take place at the Hotel Cecil, London. Believing that overseas settlement and tho right distribution of the British population affects the well-being of the Empire as a whole, and of each individual citizen, the Society for the Overseas Settlement of British Women is organising " Discussion Clubs " throughout Great Britain for girls and young women of all classes, so that they may learn more of the history and needs—past and presnet—of the Dominions. Members of the clubs will be given opportunities to meet people who are engaged with the problems of Empire settlement, and may, if they wish, take some practical part in the work of the women's branch of the Oversas Settlement Committee. From Manchester comes news that the establishment of a new British artificial silk company, with a capital of £1,000,000, is now ne&ring completion. Talk of the new concern to manufacture artificial fibre has been current for some time, but nothing definite had so far been made public. A number of prominent Lancashire men will be on the board, and it is hoped to issue the prospectus in November. An excellent site for a mill has been obtained at Kendal, Westmoreland, with room for large extensions, and valuable water rights have been acquired—an essential 30 far as the manufacture of artificial silk is concerned. One unit will be put down producing three tons of silk per day. A very successful garden fete was held at the towns of the Mount Hobson Croquet Club, Omahu Road, on Thursday, December 3. Progressive croquet was enjoyed by the visiting players, while the club" members were busily engaged at. the various stalls, which were in charge of the following ladies: —Fancvwork, Mesdames Clark and Harbutt; cake, Mrs. Shnirsta; sweets, Mrs. Badeley; produce, Mrs. Johnston. Afternoon tea was served under the capable supervision of Mrs. Dickin, and the table was most artistically decorated in the club colours (red and white) by Mesdames Mueller and Blaikie. During the afternoon the Italian String Band added greatly to the enjoyment of the visitors and members. As a result of the fair the funds of the club will be considerably augmented. The Ever Ready Committee of the Victoria League gave a most enjoyable party to the members of the Freeman's Bay (girls) branch of the Young Citizen's League at the Y.W.C.A. last Friday evening. Among those present were Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M. (president), and Mr. H. Stebbing. organising secretary of the Y.C.L. Mesdames Edgar, Granger, Williams, Anstiss and Rirkerby and the Misses Gerrard, Tizard and Goddard. Mr. Cutten referred to the loss sustained by the Victoria League in the death of its late president, Mr. W. J. Napier. A very jolly evening was spent by the girls in competitions and games, organised by Mrs. Anstiss, and Mrs. Williams was in charge of supper. Opportunity was taken during the evening to make a presentation of a bridal edition of the Victoria League's Cookery Book to Miss Tizard, of the Y.W.C.A., in view of her approaching marriage.
