NEWMARKET BRIDGE.
Sir, —The proposal about to be submitted to the Newmarket ratepayers to construct another road and bridge over the railway line approximately 100 yards from the present Manukan Road or Broadway Bridge and a few feet from Victoria Crescent, is, in my opinion, most preposterous. From Carlton Gore Road straight through to Ma mi kaii Road or Broadway is only a distance of approximately 165 ft. through a reserve, which is the council's own property, without buildings thereon, giving a clear view in turning to all users. If Carlton Gore Road was carried to its full width along this 165 ft.,. with large curves at its intersection with Manukau Road or Broadway in the same manner as now obtains at the entrance to Domain Drive, and if Broadway was widened 10ft. or 15ft. from this point into Newmarket, Carlton Gore Road would be more generally used, making Broadway a most imposing thoroughfare and giving a magnificent entrance to this important Auckland centre. On the score of cost alone, together with the loss of a much larger area of the council's valuable reserve, further argument seems unnecessary. It is unfortunate that the council is embodying other proposed work in the one loan proposal, thereby not allowing a straightout vote on this particular question. As one interested in the progress and advancement of Newmarket, I trust the ratepayers will make a personal inspection ' and judge for themselves the merits of the scheme before recording their votes on such an important question. Newmarket Ratepayer.
