TIDAL CURRENTS.
EFFECT OF BREAKWATERS. THE NEED OF CAUTION. COMMENT BY ENGINEER. The effect of the harbour breakwaters on the tidal currents is referred to by the engineer to the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. I). Holderness, in his report on the .development of the port. In dealiyg with the western breakwater the engineer said the structure would require to be lengthened by about 230ftduring the construction of the proposed biiFk oil berths at Western Wharf. Beyond this point the wharf would bend to the eastward, and the original plan provided? for the breakwater being extended a furtSier 1300 ft. on the new alignment. Wh3e provision was now made in the plan and estimates for this extension with the object of facilitating the handling of vessels (during berthing and unberthing, it should not be proceeded with until very careful tests had been carried out and observations made on tho effect of the 230 ft. extension. Although the effect of its completion as originally designed would undoubtedly be to deflect the main tidal current further from the ends of the wharves, it would be necessary to determine definitely that it would not. also create eddies and swirls, which might be more disturbing to navigators than the benefits derived.
