ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

CASE OF ELDERLY MAN. UNABLE TO EARN LIVING. The story of an elderly man's difficulty in earning enough to keep himseif was related in the Police Court yesterday when William Mercer, aged 63, was charged before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., with attempting to commit suicide at Kumeu on Saturday. It was stated by the police that accused had been in good circumstances, but his money became exhausted. He tried to work, but it proved too much ior him, with the result that he made the attempt on his life. On the undertaking of his son-in-law to look after him, accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon. Payment of costs was ordered.
