QUICK WORK WITH MAILS.
A piece of work which does credit to the enterprise and zeal of the mail staff of the chief post office was accomplished when the Aorangi arrived at Auckland last evening. To have a letter mail of the size brought by the ship despatched South with no appreciable holding up of the express trains is a feat upon which they can well be congratulated. By a little preliminary organisation, and a crowded hour of work, a day has been gained for all places south of Auckland. This is a considerable convenience, especially for the recipients of business correspondence. The present is a time when it will be particularly welcpme. There have been complaints from time to time about delay in the inland distribution of foreign mails owing to train connections being missed. Generally the blame could not be laid upon the mail staffs. Time-tables had not been adjusted with sufficient nicety to allow of immediate forwarding. Now that the Vancouver boat is being brought into port earlier than it was, the Post Office is evidently determined that every effort will be made to take advantage of the situation. Restoration of the mail agent system is the first factor to aid in swift transfer from boat to train. When the Aorangi anchored everything was ready, so that the mailbags could be placed on the expresses as quickly as launch and lorry could carry them to the station. The local staff did its share of the work admirably, with a result for which it can be heartily commended.
