DROVE ON RAILWAY LINE.
A MOTORIST'S OFFENCE.
ROAD BLOCKED BY FLOOD.

A charge of driving a motor-car along the railway line at Waiotu last May was heard to-day against George Lyell Gibson. He was also charged with trespassing on the line. Constable J. Quinn, of Hikarangi, stated that when driving from Whangaroa to Whangarei, defendant, on reaching Waiotu, unstapled the wire and took the car on the line.
Defendant pleaded guilty, but stated that the river "was rising'at the fciioe and he was unable to continue* Ha could not see how he could leave his car on the road so he took it on the railway line and drove it along for about half a mile. The magistrate. Mr. R. W. ista, said that the defendant must not go on the railway. If a similar position occurteu again he must let the car remain on the road. The offence was a serious one, but verv unusual. Defendant was convicted and fined SUS and costs, amounting to 265. The raagistrate said that if such a thing happened again he would treat the matter more seriously. The second charge was withdrawn.
