GOODSELL STILL CHAMPION.

DEFEAT OF J. PADDON. SCULLING ON PARRAMATTA. YOUTH TRIUMPHS OVER AGE. A MAGNIFICENT RACE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Nov. 8. The race for the world's sculling cham- i pionship between Major M. Goodsell, the j holder of the title, and J. Paddon, took j place yesterday on the Parramatta River. I Goodsell won by a length and a-half. i In the early stages of the race Paddon i established a lead of half a-length. He i was rowing 36 strokes a minute to Good- j sell's 38. Paddon rowed powerfully and Goodsell j with great ease. At the mile the latter j had secured a clear length's lead. This j he increased to four lengths in the next j half-mile, and to five lengths on passing J the Cabarita. Paddon now appeared to bo tiring, but j he made a desperate effort, and reduced I the gap to three lengths. Fifty yards from home Goodsell eased I up slightly and Paddon came up, but it i was no use, and Goodsell won a magni.fi- I cent race by one and a-half lengths, j Time, 22m 50s. Choppy water and a head wind made | the going heavy. The race was the triumph of youth over age. PREVIOUS WINNERS. CONTESTS FOR THE TITLE. RECORD SINCE YEAR 1876.
