EXPORTATION OF APPLES.
PORT ALBERT ARRANGEMENTS [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] PORT ALBERT. Saturday. It is anticipated that a large increase in the export of apples from the Port Albert district to the British markets will be made this season, and arrangements for the necessary supplies are well in hand. A shipment of Canadian cases has already come to hand, o,nd probably the bulk of the shipment, about 18,000 cases, will be used for export packing. Last season apples for export had to bo railed to Wellington, but it is hoped this season that arrangements will be made for shipments to be made from Auckland. The long journey to Wellington in railway trucks affects the keeping quality of "the fruit and the additional railway freight adds about Is 3d to the cost of placing the fruit on the overseas steamer. Campbell, director of horticulture. Colonel Gray, director of the Export Fruit Control Board, and Messrs. H. S. Izard and H. E. Napier, of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation. Mr. R. H. Travels presided. It was stated that it was hoped to export about 5000 cases of apples from Te Kauwhata this season, although the shipping strike might have deleteriously affected the prospects. An early variety of apple, the. Cravenstein, was extensively grown at To Kauwhata, and was matured at the end of January. Owing to the delay occasioned by the strike there might be no boats available until toward the end of February. The following resolution was carried unanimously: —"That this meeting of Te Kauwhata fruitgrowers is of opinion that it is desirable in the best interests of the fruit industry and all branches of horti culture that the director of horticulture should visit England during the coming export j season."
