PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY.

OPENING IN DUNEDIN. THE MODERATOR-DESIGNATE. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, which this year is being held at Dunedin, opens tomorrow evening in First Church, Moray Place, Dunedin. The assembly was originally fixed to begin on November 3, but in view of the opening of the New Zealand and South Seas' Exhibition the date was later altered to November 10. It was necessary, however, to adhere in part, to the original intention, and the assembly met in Dunedin last Tuesday. It was duly constituted by the retiring moderator, the Rev. George Miller, of North East Valley. The roll was laid *on the table and a motion was carried to adjourn to November 10. Many matters of importance to the .Presbyterian Church will be brought forward and discussed at this assembly. The moderator-designate, the Rev. John Kilpatriek, of Green Island, will deliver his inaugural address and will then preside over the gathering. The majority of the Auckland delegates will leave for the South this evening. The members of the Green Island Church, feeling that their minister was greatly honoured by being called to the moderator's chair, recently made a presentation to him of a handsome silk gown and a sum of money. Mr. Kilpatric-k, who has been in the Green Island charge for the past 22 years, was born at Stevenston,. on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland, and was brought up in the Free Church. He was educated at Arden public school, and later began the study of Latin and Greek preparatory to entering the university. Removing to Glasgow he attended tutorial classes in the Free Church College, maintaining himself by office work during the day. He took the full arts course at Glasgow University and later entered the Free Church Theological College under the principalship of Dr. G. C. M. Douglas. After being licensed Mr. Kilpntrick decided to come to New Zealand, arriving With his wife at Dunedin, and in January, 1.894, he was inducted to the charge of Warepa and Kaihiku, where he spent 10 fruitful atid happy years. From there he was called to his present charge at Green Island. The moderator-designate has always taken a full share in the general work of the Church, For 30 years he has been a member of the Synod's Church Extension Committee and for 18 years its convener. At present he is convener of the Synod's Church Erection and Finance Committee. He has also been prominent in educational movements, being one of the original members of Cohimba College, vice-chairman of St. Mnrsraret's, and chairman of the John McGlashan Board. Mr. Kilpntrick is particularly well known | as the clerk of the Dunedin Presbytery, an office ho has held for the past eight years.
