HAMILTON WOMAN CLERK. ADMISSION OF OVER £l5O. COMMITTAL FOR SENTENCE. [HY TIXEGIUPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] HAMILTON, Friday. A young woman named Janet East-on (Mr. H. B. Robb), appeared before Mr. YVvvern Wilson, S.M., in Court to-day and pleaded guilty to four charges of theft from her employers, the Electrical ( finstruction Company, of New Zealand, involving sums totalling £166 17s 4d, and to one charge of forging a receipt by altering the figures from £22 to £32. Detective CalJoty said accused was in the employ of the Electrical Construction Company, of New Zealand, at Hamilton as a clerk and book-keeper, from March 18 to September 25 of this year. It was her duty to receive sums on behalf of the company, issue receipts, enter the amounts in the books and bank the money. Evidence was given by several witnesses that they paid various sums to accused at the company's office, and that she issued them receipts on behalf of the company. Henry Brown, manager of the branch, said ho questioned accused concerning money that was missing, and after first denying having committed thefts she admitted stealing sums totalling £lsl 19s. She said other sums might have been taken, but she did not remember the details. A signed statement embodying the admissions was handed in. Witness said the accused also admitted having altered a receipt from £22 to £32. The total amount misappropriated was £166 19s 4d. To Mr. Robb: The accused handled cash from the time she was first employed. She was paid £2 a week. The ledger was audited every month by the company's accountant, but the receipt book was never checked with the bank pass-book. Corroborative evidence was given by the accountant for the firm, Levi Hird Tomlinson, who added that- an offer of restitution had been made by two Taumarunui residents on condition that no prosecution should take place. Detective J''. Callolv deposed that accused had admitted the charges to him. She had said she did not know what she had done with the money, but she had bought little presents with some of it. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court, Auckland, for sentence. Bail was allowed.
