USEFUL HINTS.

Aluminium Saucepans.—To take the black off aluminium pans, after boiling water in them, mix some vinegar and silver sand together and rub. The aluminium will soon look as bright as new. To Peel Apples. —Pour scalding water over apples, and they can be peeled without waste or trouble.

Sugary Jam. —Jam which has become sugary can be made like newly-preserved by putting it into the oven for a while until the sugar melts and then leaving to cool.

Mashed Potatoes.—To make mashed potatoes li.s;hi and creamy, beat them well with a fork, adding a little hot milk.

Press-Studs-. —If press-studs on washing garments are fastened before they are put through the wringer, they will not squash, and can be used over and over again.

Care oi the Copper.—After the copper has been emptied, it should be rubbed all oyer with soap while still warm. This will prevent it rusting, and will help to form the suds when the copper is filled for the next washing day.

For Window Sills.—lf window sills are washed with a weak solution of chloride of lime, it will be found effective for keeping midges and gnats out. It also helps to keep the air fresh in warm weather.

A Steamed Pudding.—When steaming a pudding, do not. quite fill ilie basin, or there will not he room for it to rise. In I,oiling one, however, see that it is quite full, or the water will get in. Crusts of I,read may hp used to fill up a gap, hut must he removed before the pudding is turned out. When boiling a pudding in a cloth it is a good idea to put an old plate at the bottom of the saucepan to prevent the pudding sticking to the pan.
