VARIED LIST OF CASES. TWO VAGRANTS SENTENCED. ONE SENT TO GAOL FOR YEAR. An unkempt man, James Edgar Steere, aged 54, pleaded not- guilty in the Police Court yesterday when charged with being idle and disorderly.

Three' constables gave evidence to the effect that the - accused had been loitering about the waterfront and sleeping out. Senior-Sergeant Edwards referred to accused's-substantial list of previous convictions for vagrancy. • ■ The magistrate, Mr. Hunt,' imposed a sentence of 12 months' imprisonment. Little! interest in his immediate future was displayed by George Ross, aged 51, when lie appeared for sontence for vagrancy.

Captain Davies said accused was not a suitable - case for the Salvation A rm y Home. 'He had displayed slight mental traits. •

A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed, the magistrate remarking that accused could be medically examined at the gaol. STOWAWAYS GIVEN CHANCE. Two young Americans, Guy Carney and William J. Rogers, appeared on remand on a charge of stowing away on the steamer Suffolk at Colon. The .senior-sergeant said, .both the accused had worked well on the voyage.

The Magistrate: I will give' the boys a chance, but they must not be seen here again. The accused were convicted and discharged. DISTURBANCE IN STREET. Disorderly behaviour in Hardinge Street, Newton, resulted in the appearance of Alfred Holmes. The senior-sergeant said accused had been one of a party of four who caused a disturbance by kicking a tin about the street and shouting. The other three had been dealt with. Accused was fined £3.

ALLEGED WIFE DESERTION. In the case of Samuel Henry Welsh, aged 41 (Mr. Hart), charged with deserting his wife in Ho hart. Tasmania, SeniorDetective Ward stated that extradition proceedings were pending. Accused was remanded for a week, bail being fixed at £IOO.

A WAYWARD GIRL. A girl, aged 18, admitted a breach of the terms of her release on probation. Adjutant Gordon said the girl left the Salvation Army Home and was absent for several, days. She had been under the influence of another girl. Accused was ordered to be returned to the institution. TWO CASES REMANDED. A remand to Hamilton was made in the case of Jenny Easton (Mr. Ilampson), charged with theft of £lO, the property of the Electric Construction Company. William Fitzgerald, aged 75, who was found sleeping out, was remanded for a week on a charge of vagrancy.
