HAIRDRESSERS' AWARD.

UNION'S CLAIMS GRANTED. SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY. The Auckland Hairdressers' Assistants' Award, issued by the Arbitration Court, to be operative for two years commenc ing from November 2, 1925, has granted the claims of the union in respect of tho three points in dispute, namely, wages, holidays and the day of the weekly halfholiday. The minimum weekly wage for journeymen is fixed at £4 17s 6d, in accordance with the Court's recent decisions in other districts. In addition to the usual recognised days, the new award makes provision for 10 days holiday at tho -end of a year's continuous service. This term of service does not include that, served previous to the coming into effect of the award. "The employers asked that the day of the half-holiday be left optional," said the Court in a memorandum. The experience of the Court is that this is unsatisfactory. There is no evidence that the Saturday half-holiday, which has been in force for four years, has been unsatisfactory to a majority of thp emplovers, and, so far as we could gather from the evidence, only a minority of the employers desired to revert to Wednesday or' Thursday. We have therefore decided to retain Saturday as tho weekly half-holiday, as desired by the union."
