INFLAMMATION IN' STOCK.
HINTS FOR TREATMENT.
Every stockman has had occasion to treat an animal suffering from inflammation of some part of the body. It may he only a swelling due to a kick, strain or wound, but yet it requires attention. Then, again, it may be more serious, affecting some of the internal organs. Heat, swelling, pain and redness aro symptoms which characterise inflammation. While the trouble may be due to external injury, there is always danger of infection, with the result that pus forms. The increased heat is due to increased bloodflow to the part. Swelling very often takes place, and the pressure on sensory nerves causes pain. Inflammation in a tendon of a horse results in lameness, or of the udder of a cow in suspension of milk secretion. Chronic inflammation very often results in formation of new tissue. As soon as the blood cells find their way back into the circulation and the flead cells disintegrate inflammation terminates. In the first place, remove the cause of the irritation and rest the part affected. Comfortable quarters, special care and dieting of animals are resorted to. Applying heat, rubbing, or sometimes a counter-irritation must be set up in order to bring relief. Heat is indicated in all inflammations, excepting when of bacterial origin. It stimulates the circulation, and aids in re-absorption of exudates, and by relaxing the tissues relieves pain. In case of septic inflammation cold is more effective. After applying heat or cold as indicated and massaging, stimulating liniments are often effective. In the case of sweeny, ringbone, etc., counter irritation is needed, and blistering and firing are means used. In most cases of inflammation one is reasonably safe in applying hot- water or poultices to the parts affected.
