BACK FROM COLOGNE.
SIX PIONEER POLICEWOMEN. DIFFICULT WORK IN GERMANY. Six British women police who have been doing difficult work for two years among girls and women in the occupied area of Cologne returned to England recently. Four German women whom they have "trained are left behind to carry on the work. Economy is stated to be the primary reason for disbandment. Commandant Allen, Chief of the Women's Auxiliary Service, in an interview, expressed great satisfaction with the work done by the British women. "We went out there at the request of the War Office," she said, "for six months. It was an experiment to deal with tho abnormal situation created by the presence of tho Army of Occupation. "The British 'Tommy,' always popular, with little to do and plenty of money as a result c? the depreciated exchange and the German girls with no money and no work created an unprecedented position. "We have stayed two years. It has been difficult work, but we have had every assistance from the German people and the authorities at home. It has needed exceptional womeo to carry on—women of great tact—but I think we have come thruogh with flying colours. "The situation now is,greatly improved. The exchange is stable, the women and girls have been able to find work in part as a result of the efforts of the women police, and things are much better. With the withdrawal of the army it will be normal again. We have trained four German women. They are the first women police in Germany, and will be the nucleus of a German women's police force, I am confident."
