ABANDONED SINKING.
ITALIAN STEAMER'S FATE. RESCUE OF THE CREW OF 27. Sun. NEW "i'ORK. Oct, 21. The Italian cargo steamer, Ignazio Florio has been abandoned in a sinking condition. The 27 members of her crew were removed after an amazing rescue by the United States Shipping Board's steamer President Harding. The latter vessel stood by all night unable to assist the Italian steamer because of the high seas and hurricane. These conditions moderated sufficiently in the morning, however, to allow of lifeboats approaching the derelict. Oil was used to smooth the seas. All the Ignazio Florin's lifeboats were smashed and her rudder was torn away. The Ignazio Florio was a steamer of 5435 gross tons. She was built in 1920 at Sunderland by R. Thompson and Son, Limited, and was owned by Messrs. I. and V. Florio. Her port of registry was Palermo. The rescuing vessel, President Harding, is a twin-screw steamer of 14,000 tons.
