YOUNG MAORI'S DEATH.
ACCIDENT WITH A RIFLE. BLOOD POISONING FOLLOWS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] WHAKATANE. Thursday. As a result of a shooting accident that occurred about a month ago at Matahi Henerc Rua, son of the well-known native of the Urewera Country, died in the Opotiki Hospital 011 Tuesday from blood poisoning. Deceased, who was 35 years of age, was practising shooting with a Winchester repeating rifle. He fired several shots at a target and then one of the cartridges jammed. He placed the point of the barrel against his thigh and proceeded to hammer at the cartridge with a stone. The cartridge exploded, the bullet entering the boy's thigh. An inquest was opened, and adjourned to enable the evidence of the doctor who attended deceased to be taken.
