LABOUR DAY CELEBRATIONS

AN ELABORATE CARNIVAL.

A three days' Labour carnival will be held over the week-end to celebrate Labour Day. The carnival will commence on Saturday with a gold medal League football match, between those old rivals, Marists and Ponsonby. Great interest is being taken by the members of the two teams. They are training as never before in order to secure the honour of being the first Labour Day gold medal winners and both teams will field their full strength. This event will be preceded by a curtain-raiser and interested spectators may, if they choose, also view the keen Soccer events on No. 2 ground.

On Saturday evening the Waterside Workers' Silver Band will parade from the Town Hall at 7 p.m., en route 1o Carlaw Park, where a splendid programme will be submitted to the public. The Labour-' Day Committee will submit the best talent that c-an be procured from Rotorua in the form of speciallyselected glee singers. xVmong the number are the celebrated sopranos, Tulip Apare and Ratu, the contralto, Poto, and 10 other artists, the whole forming a delightful party. The National Highland Dancing Association will produce a number of spectacular events. The Highland march and combined dancing events by this organisation, accompanied by the Scotsman's favourite instrument, will provide entertainment for many enthusiasts. The fireworks display is of a novel nature. The Colonial Ammunition Company on this occasion will introduce several new features. The display will be preceded by a number of warning rockets.

The afternoon proceedings on Sunday will commence with a parade of the Waterside Workers' Silver Band, who, after mardhing through the city, will render appropriate selections. The Maori glee party will again offer a programme of music, together with a sacred poi display. Eight Labour candidates wiH deliver short addresses on current topics by means of loud-speaking amplifiers. In the evening, under special electric illumination, the programme will comprise items by the silver band and the Maori singers. The Lyric Quartette will render a programme of part singing and solos, and Mr. McElwain will entertain the audience with his humour.

Monday, as usual, will find Labour Day activities held at the Domain. Basket ball, teams will commence early, as their programme is a lengthy one, no less than 16 teams having entered for the various events. The Highland dancing programme will also commence early on account of the heavy nominations, 120 competitors taking part in this portion of labour's celebration. The Maori party will be in evidence, with a varied selection of items. Heavy nominations ha.ve been received for the athletic events, and this portion of the programme will be full of interest. The Comrade Boys' Club will render a gymnastic display, and as this was a popular item of last year's celebration, it will undoubtedly again find favour with the spectators. The carnival will conclude at Carlaw Park on Monday evening with electric illumination and the grand finale of the fireworks display, introducing new features and a great baloon. The Maori concert party, in songs, choruses and dances should prove an entertaining portion of the evening. The Highland a.nd National Dancing Association will m#ke a special display.
