■TK& rand wick plate.

PILLIEVVSNKIE V. WINDBAG.

. Details bearing on the Band-wick Plate, which event was ran on the concluding day of the Australian Jockey Club's Serine Meeting-, show that tho time (3m f>sis) given in the cabled account of the race was quite .incorrect. The two miles attached to the race were compassed in 3m 35js. and, as Windbag was credited with covering the last mile in lm 37Js, he once again revealed a line dash of brilliancy. The following is clipped from the Sydney Sun:—"Hardbeaded backers laid five to two and three to oeo on "Windbag, while Pilliowinkie had. a lew supporters at threes. Pilliowinkie nominally made the pace, but he _ merely cantered for nearly a mile, with Windbag loping along behind him. Pilliewinkie put on the pace at nine furlongs and increased his lead a little, but Windbag started all out at the mile post. Fast he went, and- so did the leader, who still had three lengths' lead into the straight. The New Zealand gelding bung on tenaciously, but Windbag passed mm before the distance was reached. Stil] Pilliewinkie was not done, but he could not quite pace it with the little champion, .who. as usual, eased up over the last few yards and won by a mere neck —too close to be pleasant for his backers. _ The stewards had an idea that Munro rider of Windbag, t-ook a. risk by easing up his horse, and sooke to the jockey, who fold them that Windbag is prone to loaf the moment he has headed the leader. The explanation was accepted."

RAWHETU'S VICTORY.

CURPRiSE OF THE DAY. The win registered by the Auckland-bred 'nnd owned gelding Rawhetu at Randwick on the lOtii inst. proves to have been ft big surprise. Under the heading " A Stolen Race.'' the Sydney Bun had the following bearing on the event won by Rawhetu: —" It is a lone time since a long-distance race at Randwick was stolen in the way that Rawhetu won the W'averley Handicap. Ihis pelding. who belongs to a New Zealand lady, had iio form to recommend him to backers. Ho had. never won a raco out of a dozen starts, most of them in Melbourne lastseason, where he gained only two minor places in small races. Further, he had apparently tired at the end of the mile and a-quarter Trial Stakes a week earlier. In tho decision of the Waverley Handicap the Day Comet gelding Quickly established a substantial lead, which he increased as the field went along the back. Abviously the jockeys of the other horses contesting the race thought ho would dron back to the-m. Cracknel! skiing on to Mirthmaker, and oven Dialogue did not fry to take the lead — perhaps he couldn't. The others gradually made up a little ground between the mfurlong and half-mile posts; nevertheless Rawhetu swunsr into the straight with a lead of sis lengths, and he camei home an easy winner by two lengths in front of the favourite. Solidify, in the fast time of 3m 0-p. While some bookmakers did not write Eawhetu's name, the gelding had a few supporters at long odds, and a. few b°o<tmakers. thought they had found "money from homo' when they laid mm at 14 to _l. One local punter who backed him to win £■l2oo cot some bets at 50 to 1; but most of them at twenties."

NIGGER MINSTREL.

ENGAGEMENTS CANCELLED. Press Association messages received respectively from "Wellington and Christchurch yesterday state thai !Nisiger has Keen withdrawn Jrom all engagements at the spring-meeting of the Wellington Racing Club and also those at the Canterbury Jockey Club. Nigger Minstrel's name was struck out at Christchurch at 10.50 a.m., and at Wellington at 11.15 a.m. The scratching of Nigger Minstrel at this important stage of the season would appear ■to point to the All Black horse having failed to train on properly. It will be remembered that a leg ailment came against Nigger Minstrel after contesting in the Craven Plate at Randwick (N.S.W.). in the spring of 1921, and as a, result he had to be sent into retirement for the remainder of the season. He made a reappearance on the scene at Wanganui last month, when he ran a dead-heat witii the brilliant Gold Light for first honours in the decision of the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes, and strong hopes 'were entertained as to his playing a strong part in important races near at hand. Nigger Minstrel is engaged in several important races at the Auckland Racing Club's > Summer Meeting, but it is for time to reveal whether he will be included among the contestants at Ellerslie.
