THE LATE LEOPARD.
Sir, —Now that the poor beast is dead, it may not be inopportune to point out that if there had been no zoo there %vould have been no escaped leopard and the consequent sleepless nights for ''Anxious Parents." A zoo, to all real lovers of animals, is entirely distasteful and a relic of barbarism. There can be no justification for tho cruelty which condemns beautiful wild animals to a life sentence in uncongenial surroundings. No one would care to visit a convict prison occupied by "lifers." This is exactly what a zoo is to animals. It seems a pity that a progressive city like Auckland should not have broken away from such a cruel custom by refusing to have a zoo and. thus shown an example to the older cities of man's duty to the animals. N. G. Harries.
