BOXING.
TOURNAMENT AT PAEROA. SOME SPIRITED CONTESTS[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] PAEROA. Thursday. The second annual boxing tournament under the auspices of the Waihi Boang Association was held at the Gaiety Theatre, Paeroa. A large crowd attended to witness the ten bouts scheduled. Jim Thorpe ! Waihi) was reieree, lus decisions meeting with general approval. Results:— Midget-weights.—Warn©, Waihi (Set. 121b.) v. Hayes, Paeroa (sst. 2ib.) was a willing go. Warn© received the decision. Feather-weights.—C. Bailey, Paeroa (Sat. 221b.) v. C. McConneil, Waihi (9st.); Bailey did most forcing, but lacked judgment, and in. the third round was floored for eight. McConneil was the better fighter, and received the verdict. The star feather-weight bolt was between Jim Colledge, Waihi, provincial champion (9st. 21b.), and B. Purdy, Auckland (Ost. 41b.in six two-minute rounds. The first round was an even go, characterised by considerable clinching. In the second round Colledge did the forcing, but did not connect very often. Purdy hung on _and rained down a series o£ clean blow 3 which had a steadying effect. The third round was fairly even, and Colledge made the most of his opportunities, _ but Purdy put up a clean fight. The. closing stages of the fourth round ended sensationally by Purdy claiming a foul, alleging his opponent had bitten his ear. On the doctor's examination the foul was disallowed. Purdy refused to fight on and Colledge received the decision. Light-weight Division. —G. Gunn, Paeroa (Sat. lllb.) v. J. Trealone, Turua (9st. lib.): Trealone made the pace in the first two rounds. The second round opened _with Trealone still very aggressive, but_ Gunn held on gamely and took the punishment well until Trealone landed a punch below the belt, Gunn receiving the verdict on the foul. C. Wright, Te Aroha (lOst.) boxed H. Burt, Kerepeohi. (lOst.). The fight was a spirited one throughout and went the full distance, the decision being a draw. Bantams.—N. Williams. Paeroa (Bst. 51b.) v, C, Moralie, Waihi (Bst. 31b.); Moralie won throughout, his chief blow being' a straight loft. The local lad made a good showing, but was ouiboxed. Moralie received the decision. _ Welter-weights.—The star bout of the evening was the, welter-weight contest fought between Viv. Smith, Paeroa flOst. 81b.) and B. Gilbert, Turua (lOst. lOlb.). six two-minute rounds. The contest went only three rounds, and was a real good exhibition. Both men took turns at forcing the pace, but Smith's training and ring experience stood to him. With a beautiful straight right to the point in the closing stages of the third round Smith landed a knock-out blow. Smith was also declared ibo winner of the gold medal presented by Mr. H. Johnston, of Newmarket, Auckland. A. Shacbolt, Te Aroha (list. 41b.) fought If. McCowatt. Turua, (lOst. fib.). Shadbolt, using a left hook effectively throughout the bout, received the decision by a narrow margin. Catch-weight.—A special four two-minute catch-weight bout was fought between S. Wells, Te Aroha (12at. Sib. and S. McCoid, Turua (ilst.l. The bout was not a very interesting exhibition, but it went the full distance, the referee's verdict being a draw.
