VICTORY FOR TAMMANY.
NEW YORK CITY MAYORALTY. HEARST CANDIDATE DEFEATED. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 20. Hie defeat of Mayor Hylan, tho Hearst candidate in the New York City Mayoralty primary last week, is ti«f» f. f ,pi G of conversation. State Senator Walker, tho' Tammany candidate for tho Democratic nomination for Mayor, defeated Mayor Dylan, who aspired, to a third term with tlio backing of Mr. Hearst by a majority of 100,000. The Republicans nominated Mr. Frank Waterman, the millionaire fountain-pen manufacturer and organisation candidate, who received a vote several times tho combined vote of his two rivals, Messrs. Lyons and Bennett. The nomination of Mr. Walker furnished the Governor, Mr. Smith, with another signal political triumph. In Tammany's first battle since the death of " Boss" Murphy, Mr. Smith won his spurs as the actual leader of tho ancient political organisation. The governor is now the undisputed dictator of the Democratic organisation in the State, and, if the Democrats elect their candidate for Mayor, Mr. Smith, as Governor, Tammany chief and ruler by proxy in the City Hall, will wield more political power than any person in the country, with the single exception of the President 'himself. His complete victory means that Mr. Smith can have tho Democratic nomination for the Presidency in 1928, with tiro solid backing of the New York delegation and the delegations from other Atlantic seaboard States. In the same ratio, tho political ambitions of Mr. Hearst, the apostle of the anti-British creed, are glimmering.
