JSHORTLAN'D ST, POST OFFICE. AMOUNT OF THE PAYMENT. OFFER OF £! 00,000 DECLINED. The Auckland City Council met ■ last evening, the Mayor, .Mr. G- Bail don, presiding. There were also present Miss E. Melville, and Messrs. J. A. Warnock, J. W. Court, J, Robertson, C. F. Bennett, L, A. Eadv, G. Brownlee, F. W. H. Brinsden, J. Dempsey, J. A. C. Allnm, S. I. Crookes, G. Knight, J. W. Hardiey, J. B. Paterson, A. Thompson, E. J. Phelan, M. J. Coyle, J. Donald, and A. J. Eutrican. Advice was received from the Minister for Public Works that the council's offer of £IOO.OOO for the post office site. Shortland Street, could not be accepted. The matter was referred to the city solicitor. Tenders for the supply of jjiotor spirit were dealt with. Five firms tendered and the prices ranged from 16s 3d to 16s_6d a, case for light grade, and from 14s 3d to 15s 6d for heavy grade. Officers to whom the tenders had beer referred reported that since the prices had been received there had been a fall of 2s a case, and this was governed by a clause in the specifications. It was stated, in connection with the possibility of bulk supplies in tb£ future, that, it might be advisable to include a clause in the contract dealing with the matter, although the present contract referred exclusively to case supplies. The Stores Committee recommended that, in view of the fact that no concession would accrue to the council by entering into a contract- at the prices submitted, no tender be accepted. It was further recommended that the councd's instruction that all purchases be made through the Stores Purchasing Department be strictly adhered to. The recommendations were adopted. The request of the Auckland Commercial Travellers' Association for a donation toward the effort to collect £SOOO to buy blankets for the poor and needy of the city to enable the Government subsidy of £ISOO to be applied for was declined. It was reported that the council had a balance of £620 in the unauthorised expenditure allocation. A letter was received from C. Barker asking that the name of Grey Street be changed as he found difficulty in letting houses there, the present name being unpopular with tenants. The request was declined. The request of the Glen Eden Town Board for assistance in reconstruction of the West Coast Road, including two bridges within the boundaries of the town district, a length of 154 chains, was declined. The city engineer reported that the council was already contributing toward the Great North Road, which ran through Glen Eden district and gave access to the cemetery.
