SIR ERNEST RUTHERFORD.

OENTERTAINED IN HAMILTON. A BRILLIANT FUNCTION. [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN COBJiESPONDEN'T. ] HAMILTON. Thursday. A conversazione arranged by Mr. and Mrs. G. Rutherford, Mr. and Mrs. If. G. Sergei, and Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Strieff, way given in honour of Sir Ernest Rutherford in the Alexandra Hali last evening, There was a large attendance of friends of Sir Ernest Rutherford's relatives, and the function was a brilliant one. A delightful • musical programme was provided. Speaking on behalf of tho guests, Mr. E. Wilson thanked the Rutherford family for their kind invitation to meet their guest, whose work in the Held of research had won him world fame. His work was an inspiration, to every young New Zealander interested in science and research. Sir Ernest Rutherford thanked his audience for their kind reception and referred humorously to the wonderful strides Hamilton had made since he visited the town 11 years ago. He proceeded to discuss tho fundamental structure of the atom and in conclusion said there was still further room for research. The world was very circumscribed. Tho poles had been sat on, and there was practically only one mountain that had not been conquered. In the world of science, however, there was ample scope for fascinating study. The young and adventurous man who was, well equipped with specialised gifts had a wide field before him. Sir Ernest remarked that he came out to New Zealand because he was supposed to be overworked, but his friends out here would not believe this. He, said that at the Cavendish Laboratory he had 500 students to keep in order and was far from being the unpractical, longhaired type of professor which no doubt many people imagined him to be. 1
